Idaho's long, narrow shape makes it one of the more fragmented states for local TV in the country. Depending on which part of the state you call home, your "local" stations might actually be broadcasting out of Oregon, Wyoming, Washington, or Utah.
| Capital | Boise |
| Approx. Population | 2.06 million |
| Time Zone | Mountain (most of state); Pacific (northern Panhandle) |
| Major Cities | Boise, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene |
Four Directions, Four Different Markets
| Boise DMA | Rank #98 · ~345,250 TV households · actually extends into one Oregon county |
| Idaho Falls–Pocatello DMA | Rank #155 · extends into Jackson, Wyoming — yes, that Jackson Hole |
| Twin Falls DMA | Smaller, south-central Idaho |
| Northern Panhandle | Typically served by Spokane, Washington stations instead of an Idaho market |
If you live near the Idaho-Wyoming, Idaho-Oregon, or Idaho-Washington borders, don't be surprised if your "local" news anchor is broadcasting from another state entirely — that's simply how Nielsen drew these particular lines.
Local Stations
Boise: KBOI (CBS), KIVI (ABC), KTVB (NBC), KNIN (FOX), KAID (PBS). Idaho Falls–Pocatello: KIFI (ABC, also carrying CBS and CW on subchannels), KPVI (NBC), KIDK (FOX). Twin Falls: KMVT, which combines CBS, CW, and FOX on a single station's subchannels — a setup similar to what smaller markets in Alaska and Arkansas also use.
Idaho Public Television's Funding Model
Idaho Public Television, broadcasting statewide since 1965, is actually owned directly by the State of Idaho through the State Board of Education, with about 65% of its funding coming from private donations and CPB grants, and roughly 31% from the state itself — a structure that's kept it running consistently for six decades regardless of federal funding swings.
College Sports Run the Show
With no major NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL franchise, Idaho's sports identity centers almost entirely on college athletics — Boise State football and its famous blue "Smurf Turf" field draw the state's biggest sports audience by far, alongside Big Sky Conference basketball. Boise hosted the 2026 Big Sky men's basketball tournament, broadcast across ESPN+, ESPNU, and ESPN2. For legal streaming access to ESPN's family of networks, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Fubo all carry them as part of standard packages.
One Very Famous Filming Location
Idaho isn't a major production hub the way Georgia or Hawaii are, but it does have one genuinely famous claim: the cult-classic comedy "Napoleon Dynamite" was filmed almost entirely in and around Preston, Idaho, using mostly local, non-professional locations. It remains one of the most recognizable examples of a small Idaho town becoming a real pop-culture location.
Setting Up Your Streaming Device
Device setup works the same everywhere — our device comparison guide breaks down Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and Google TV. Budget 15–25 Mbps per stream for HD, 25–50 Mbps for 4K. Idaho's antenna reception is generally solid in and around its three main markets, though mountainous terrain elsewhere can weaken signal more than flat-state distances would suggest — see our antenna & OTA guide for details.
| Why do I get Spokane or Salt Lake City news instead of Idaho's? | Parts of northern and southeastern Idaho are officially assigned to those out-of-state markets rather than an Idaho-based one. |
| Can I watch Boise State football without cable? | Most games air on ESPN's family of networks, available through any major live TV streaming service. |
| Was Napoleon Dynamite really filmed in Idaho? | Yes — almost entirely around Preston, Idaho. |
